The quiet little village of Hoekwil is once again gearing itself for the annual event that not only captures the picturesque beauty of Hoekwil and its surrounds, but combines this with adventure-filled routes that are sure to test the endurance and skill of all competing cyclists. We’re talking about the Kingfisher Enduro Race!
On 24 March 2012, cyclists from all over the country will participate in this mountain bike race organized by Hoekwil Primary School. The Kingfisher MTB Enduro race is registered with the SA Cycling Federation and is the first leg of the South Cape Enduro Series, which riders need to complete in order to get SWD colours and qualify for SA Championships. What makes this race so unique is the fact that the various routes incorporate areas normally inaccessible to riders – from private farmlands to the precious indigenous Bergplaas State Forest. There are challenging climbs, awe-inspiring views and many indigenous birds and forest animals to glimpse en route.
The Kingfisher Enduro caters for all cyclists – from novices to professionals. Younger riders (ages 6 – 12) can compete in a short 3km race while the 20km race is a fun ride for beginner cyclists and families. For the serious riders, however, the 40km and the 70km routes will definitely test their skill, determination and fitness.
The course for 2011 has been rerouted so as to include a wider spread of riding conditions. There will be fast flat sections along the Wilderness lakes, passing Island Lake, Rondevlei, Lang vlei and Swartvlei (an international Ramsar site). The 40km route will include two big climbs (that being easier on the novice and less fit rider than in the past) superb forest and plantation sections and some very fast safe downhill sections. The 40km route will contain a total of ± 700m ascending climb. The 70km will follow the same new route and have a challenging 30km loop in the Bergplaas area in the Outeniquas! The 40km route will be within reach of most novice riders wanting a challenge but not quite ready for the higher intensity of the longer, more technical route. The 70km race starts at 07h30 and registration takes place from 06h00.
There will be a wide variety of food and drink stalls to cater for those mountainous appetites once the race is completed. So if you’re looking for that special race that not only tests your levels of fitness but also your sense of adventure, bring your family and come join us at the Kingfisher Enduro 2011!
Hoekwil Primary School is a small rural school situated 3 kilometres out of Wilderness. It was built from 1917 to 1922, when it was first opened. The school has ±150 learners and relies on fundraising events such as the Kingfisher MTB race as a means of financially keeping the school running. This dual-medium school is very much pupil-orientated with dedicated teachers who have played strong roles in the excellent achievement of the children in academic, sports and cultural arenas. Hoekwil Primary school is a true little country school made up of a diverse range of children who have the privilege of growing up in one of the most beautiful places in the world!
