The Wilderness
Wilderness is a village in heart of the Garden Route, which is a coastal area of great scenic beauty with a great natural history interest. The Cape's renowned biodiversity is evident here, with several varied habitats within close proximity of each other. Forests, scrub, and fynbos vegetation types exist among geographical features that keep the outdoor enthusiast occupied. Steep mountains harbour forest and stunning floral variation, while the lower slopes have deep forest, diverse fynbos and cool plantations. Dunes and an interesting coastline with coastal lakes and estuaries add further aspects of interest.
The Wilderness and surrounding area has an interesting history relevant to the country of South Africa itself. Due to the difficulties of reaching this area, it remained under-developed in its early years. It has always been a holiday destination for those who prefer natural areas. Still today the possibility of encountering wildlife is good; Wilderness has remained a refuge for wildlife, and now forms and integral part of the Garden Route National Park. The active visitor will encounter an array of small fauna and flora, although there are some animals which will prove difficult to spot, such as leopard and otter.
Outdoor and adventure orientated activities are available and short out rides will take you to other worlds of interest and unique vegetation. Oudtshoorn is an hours drive from Wilderness, with its world-famous caves and ostrich industry being the main draw cards, but mountain passes and interesting river gorges offer variation.
Wilderness is a peaceful village with modern amenities, and is close to George, a main economic centre of the region, with its airport and shops that cater to the needs of the visitor.
Birding in Wilderness with Dabbling Duck
Wilderness has a declared Ramsar site (The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, called the Ramsar Convention) with prolific bird life, and includes several placid lakes that were referred to as 'Pearls' by the original San inhabitants, due to their tranquil perfection. These lakes and surrounding forests are home and forage areas to many birds, and include endemic, rare and migratory birds.
An array of raptors is regularly seen, and at times several birds of prey from the surrounding habitats are either regular or vagrant visitors. There are many resident birds in the area which are both colourful and interesting, and in summer, thousands of waders are easily seen.
Dabbling Duck will supply enthusiastic guides who can introduce the visitor to the birds of The Wilderness. We have been active here for over a decade and have a good understanding and appreciation of the environment and wildlife. We utilize the trails and splendid beaches of the area, and the rivers and forests can be explored with a guide to interpret and help the visitor gain a deeper understanding of these features, the history and current events of the region. With more than 300 bird species here, the birding is generally good, and exciting sightings are regular.
The Dabbling Duck is a micro-business in Wilderness. Our guides are qualified and experienced, and have worked in many regions of Southern Africa. Our rates are competitive, and we are flexible and keen. Birding outings in mid-summer can start as early as 5 a.m., which is when the birds become active. We are only a phone-call away and support local tour operators and holiday accommodation establishments. We look forward to meeting you.
